The Wyoming Cowgirls secured a win over Wichita State on Friday night in just four sets, but lost to Creighton Saturday.
After losing the first set 17-25 on Friday, Wyoming won the second, third, and fourth set against Wichita. In the second set, the Cowgirls trailed behind Wichita, but turned the game around after tying it 19-19. Taking the score to 24-19, the Cowgirls scored eight consecutive points against Wichita, the second set ending up 25-19.
The third set followed a similar pattern as the second set where the Cowgirls trailed behind Wichita, but turned it around ending with a score of 25-22. During the fourth set, the Cowgirls took the lead and secured a 25-20 win, winning both the set and the game.
Cowgirl defense held strong with a hitting average of .197 during the match against Witchita’s .155 average. Sophomore middle blocker Jackie McBride aided the Cowgirls with nine kills, along with junior outside hitter Tara Traphagan who also had nine kills. Freshman outside hitters Hailey Zuroske and KC McMahon had eight kills throughout the match with Wichita.
Junior Setter Mackenzie Coates proved to be a crucial player as she led the Cowgirls with 37 assists. Coates also had two ace serves, nine digs, and seven kills during the match which helped lead the Cowgirls to victory.
Defensive specialist Madi Fields led back row defense with 19 digs, while freshman Erika Jones helped the Cowgirl defense with 10 digs. Fields also had 5 assists throughout the match.
The Cowgirls are set to play the University of Nevada, Las Vegas at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 26 in Laramie.
