The University of Wyoming Women’s Swimming and Diving team secures a 53-point Dual meet win against the University of Northern Colorado.
“Overall, I was looking to see what the younger swimmers would do that I hadn’t seen previous to this. I saw some really good things out of our freshmen class,” head coach Dave Denniston said. “There was solid leadership out of Lainee (Jones) and Katelyn (Blattner) who took hold of the meet. Hannah (Mclean-Leonard) had some really good races. With a meet this early in the season, there is still a lot to do and a lot of details but I am really pleased with where we are right now.”
Diver Karla Contreras, who won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, was one of the leaders in the team’s win. Freestyler Lainee Jones won the 200-meter freestyle with a 1:53.08 defeating Northern Colorado’s returning WAC champion in the event also added to the team points. Distance swimmer Olivia Staver won the 500-meter freestyle with a 5:13.73 as well as also beating Northern Colorado’s returning WAC champion in the 200-meter freestyle. Freestyler Sani Carsrud won the 50-freestyle with a 24.19. Butterfly/Individual Medley swimmer Katelyn Blattner won the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:05.17, and finally Butterflier Hannah Mclean-Leonard finishing with a 56.59 in her 100-meter butterfly.
The Cowgirls also went on to win the 200-meter freestyle relay and the 400-meter medley relay.
The next showing by the UW swimmers will be at the “Brown and Gold Meet”, where both, the Men’s and Women’s swim teams will be suiting up and racing. It will be this Friday, held at the University’s Corbett pool at 5pm.
