October 12, 2019- The Wyoming Cowboys fell late Saturday night to the San Diego State Aztecs in a hard loss 22-26. The Cowboy defense was unable to stop the Aztecs from scoring in the final two minutes of the game, giving up the lead for the final time.
“We knew going into the ball game that it would be decided by a couple of plays here and there.” Coach Bohl discussed at the Monday afternoon conference, “I think our team played really hard. We came up with the short end of the stick.”
The Aztecs’ nationally ranked rushing defense was highly anticipated in the match up against the Cowboys’ skilled rushing offense. While their defense did test the rushing game, but the Cowboys proved to be a difficult opponent, scoring two rushing touchdowns and racking up a total of 157 rushing yards. Although they averaged 248.2 yards per game, the offense broke the Aztecs’ average of allowing only 45.4 rushing yards. Xavain Valladay led the rushing team with 73 yards in the game with quarterback Shaun Chambers behind with 57 yards.
The first score of the game came only at the very end of the 1st quarter from a field goal by the Aztecs. The Cowboy rushing offense responded back with two impressive one yard rushing touchdowns from Chambers in the second. The offense scored their first touchdown of the game in a six play drive complete with a long rushing drive from Xavian Valladay and a complete pass to Gunner Gentry. Their second rushing touchdown came on 4th down conversion after a few unsuccessful rushing attempts.
The Cowboys led the 14-6 going into the second half, but they remained scoreless in the third quarter as the Aztecs racked up thirteen points from two touchdowns. Chambers threw for a 19 yard touchdown to Ismail Jr. in the fourth quarter to take the lead at 6:49 to go in the fourth quarter, making it 22-19. The Aztecs answered back for the final time with a resounding touchdown and interception to end the game with a score of 22-26.
“In the second half, we got worn down a little. San Diego dented our defensive line some.”
“We are four and two. We are on the mountain side here, getting ready to play New mexico. Our team is excited about it.”
The Wyoming Cowboy football team will return to Laramie to face the New Mexico Lobos for the UW Homecoming game on Saturday, October 19 at 1 pm. They are asking the fan population to show up in gold for a gold rush.
