As hundreds of students begin packing up their vehicles and begin their travels home for the holidays, winter driving safety awareness can save lives.
The Red Cross Club’s Safe Winter Driving Event aims to keep students safe in snowy driving conditions. The club’s president, Hannah St. Claire, said she has high hopes for The Safe Winter Driving Event that the club has been planning for months. She said she is excited to be doing something more as a student and help the community.
“We are just trying to keep the public safe,” said St. Claire.
With this event, the club aims to focus on safety as a whole, like they have with other public safety events in the past. In order to ensure safety, they are encouraging people to attend and take the number of free supplies they have on hand, which have been donated by the national Red Cross Organization. The club will also be talking about how important it is to be prepared because of the sudden and early winters that have hit Wyoming.
“[To] prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors,” the Red Cross Club’s mission statement states.
With this event, the club wants to bring to light how important it is to be a safe driver, to keep the driver and other drivers safe on the road. Winter crashes on highways are frequent across the state and the initiative to educate the public with the tools to stay safe can save lives. St. Claire believes the efforts by organizations such as the Red Cross Club can be the first step to preventing these fatalities.
The club has been a part of many community service and safety events throughout the state, but they are excited to be shedding light on this event before students embark on their travels for the holidays.
The Winter Driving Event will take place at Simpsons Plaza today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. where the public can gear up with free supplies. The Red Cross Club will be handing out free ice scrapers and providing people with information on how to build their own emergency kit to keep in their vehicles during the winter months.
