For students who are interested in the long-term effects between humans and their natural, economic and cultural environments, the Sustainability Club is a good Recognized Student Organization (RSO) to get involved with.
“The Sustainability Club matters to me because, for one, it may open opportunities for me in the future to get more involved in a career path in sustainability,” said Kami Grimm, a freshman member of the University of Wyoming Sustainability Club. “This club makes you feel very fulfilled. Every week you are trying to help better people’s lives and the planet in general.”
The purpose of the Sustainability Club is to “foster a sustainable culture in the University of Wyoming’s student body, faculty, staff and community through active engagement and education,” according to the Sustainability Club’s Constitution.
“The goal of Sustainability Club is to make the University of Wyoming more sustainable as a whole. Some of our current goals are helping eliminate food insecurity on campus, producing less waste, and composting,” said Grimm.
Grimm touched on one of the club’s main objectives, which is to allow for community outreach and involvement while focusing on sustainability and eliminating waste.
“Every couple of months we hold some sort of event that is zero waste and provides food for students on campus,” said Grimm.
The Sustainability Club works towards supporting zero waste practices as well as supporting efforts to eliminate UW’s food insecurity.
“We had the solar festival a couple months ago and the main goal of that event was to entertain people with live music while also educating about sustainability in all of Albany county and introducing emission goals for the future,” said Grimm.
Grimm also said the focus of the club remains on educating the community on the importance of introducing emission goals and the topic of sustainability in order to provide a better future for the planet.
The Sustainability Club was also involved with Earth Week, in which they participated in celebrating the planet. In doing so, the Sustainability Club was able to promote environmental, economic and social sustainability through educational events. By tabeling at different campus events, the Sustainability Club is able to spread the news about why sustainability is crucial to UW on a small scale and to the planet on a large scale.
“We also table at many different things on campus whenever we feel that we could involve more people in sustainability,” said Grimm, discussing the Sustainability Club’s willingness to spread the news about sustainability.
Alongside working towards educating others on planet sustainability and supporting zero waste practices, the Sustainability Club is also campaigning for compost. The club is currently working towards a campaign for a partnership between UW and the City of Laramie in order to divert more waste to compost rather than to the landfill.
Each member of the Sustainability Club works to provide a brighter, more sustainable future for both UW and the planet.
