Do I hear the Roaring 20’s upon us?
The 2019 year is coming to a close and with it comes the end to another semester of the Branding Iron. Of course, this is not a forever goodbye as we will be here again next semester, but it is a farewell for now.
This school year, the Branding Iron welcomed two new editors: Calie Siplon, our Editor-in-Chief, and myself, the Assistant Editor. Calie and I have worked closely together – along with our returning Online Editor, Kylee Harless – our backs hunched over our keyboards to create stories and to edit our writers’ beautiful pieces of work to orchestrate a paper for our avid and loyal readers.
It has been a long road of learning the ins and outs of editing and constructing a paper suitable for our audience, but we have enjoyed every minute of it and are constantly learning.
Our goal this year has been to keep our readers up to date on the latest news and to utilize all of our platforms, including our BI Online and social media. Breaking news stories have come up and with the available writers we have, we have been able to update our readers with the most current news possible.
We have taken some risks with our stories, trying to get involved with bigger university news including the Laurie Nichols case, Trustee resignations, UW building demolitions and parking situations. We want, especially our student readers, to know what is happening around campus and what they should be prepared for.
This is not so much as a risk, but another change we have implemented is our cover photos instead of cover stories. Not only is it, what I would say, unique and eye catching, but it allows our photographers to get some of the spotlight.
We have a wonderful team of photographers who work hard to get those photographs that speak 1,000 words and their work should be showcased like the works of art they are.
On a more personal note, I have been extremely proud of our staff this semester. We have had more writers since the previous semester and more teamwork throughout the department. The graphic and page designers, editors, writers and photographers have all been in close connection to create the best content for our readers.
I would like to thank each and every reader that takes time out of their day to pick up a paper and read through our work, even if you are catching us online. We students work hard to create what we see as a masterpiece and love to share it with you.
As spring approaches, I hope you continue to read the Branding Iron with all the stories and pictures your fellow students and classmates create. Thank you and see you next semester!
