When people say marriage is complicated, there is no better example than the Netflix movie Marriage Story.
The movie is about a couple who are trying to get through the crazy lives of an actor and a director. The film will take you through the journey of Charlie and Nichole Barber, played by Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansen. The movie starts out lovely with the two of them saying what they like most about each other, and you get the feeling that they are opposites who attract.
Unfortunately for these two, as the story unfolds, we get a glimpse of what couples really go through to get a divorce.
The movie then dives into their new lives as they try to function under this new state of normal. The two have a son named Henry and they try to make things simple for him, and themselves. In that, they find out maybe things could work out. But do they? Well, you need to find that out for yourself.
The movie was released on Netflix Dec. 6, 2019. The movie took 18 million dollars to make and it only grossed $323 thousand worldwide. So it is evident the movie did not do so hot. However, according to the Internet Movie Database (IMDB) the movie was rated an 8.1 out of 10. Many of the reviews on IMDB say people enjoyed the movie and that it did a good job at telling the story of what couples go through when going through divorce. On the flip side, there were the bad reviews. The reviews ranged from “[the] actors couldn’t save the trash movie” to “this movie is so depressing, I couldn’t finish it”.
While my review is not that bad, I do have to say that the movie was not the best. I agree the movie had a cute beginning but then afterwards it was awkward in certain places.
I noticed in some scenes they took Nichole’s side and threw Charlie to the wayside, but then the film flip-flopped between the sides. The middle of the movie was slow and the plot line seemed to stop. They got to a point where it seems like the director did not know what to do so the film just slowed to a halt before hitting the accelerator.
I can see both sides of the argument that the film tries to portray. The idea that Nichole did not believe that Charlie was there for her or Henry, despite that the film portrays her side as if she is crazy and selfish.
What helped the movie was that both sides were easy to see, which made it difficult to pick one. This causes the audience to be in the middle and ride the emotional roller coaster that both characters go through.
If you are wanting to watch a nice romantic drama, something like a Nicholas Sparks movie, this is not the movie for you. The ending is different and lacks closure, which, to be honest, I thought was not good enough for the ending.
My rating for the movie is 4/10. It was not the best movie but it was not the worst. I think people should watch it and decide for themselves what they think about the movie and make their own review.
