Today, the UWYO abroad program will be holding a fair to showcase the school’s wide variety of opportunities to study abroad. The event is showcasing over 400 of the university’s study abroad programs as well as the connected scholarship info. UW’s 400+ programs for studying abroad include countries such as Russia, China, Australia, France, Italy, South Africa, Namibia, and Brazil.
“I think that going abroad should be part of any human experience if you can manage it. There’s so much world out there to share in, and diversity of culture is a gift we should have as human beings,” said UW sophomore Shannon Fassler.
The price for these programs usually ranges from $17,000 – $6,000 for residents and $30,000 – $16,000 for non-residents. When compared to the national average cost for studying abroad, one semester is generally $18,000 per semester. The two thousand dollar cost drop from Wyoming’s programs makes a difference.
“There’s no better way to learn a language than to be there. The value of seeing how another culture operates is invaluable,” said Jael Smith, a UW sophomore.
However, given the recent worldwide outbreak of the Coronavirus, it is likely that there will be complications to studying abroad, as the outbreak has been confirmed on every significant continent aside from Africa and South America.
It is worth taking note both the University of Wyoming and the CDC have made a wary stance on going abroad in recent months. For example, the US department of travel has put a level four advisory warning on travel to and from China, meaning that there should be no travel. It should be noted that most destinations for the abroad program are ranked one and two on the travel advisory, meaning they are safe, it would still be a good idea to research before making any commitments to studying abroad.
The UW abroad fair will be held today in the Union Family Room from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will have a host of opportunities to study abroad, scholarships, and free food.
