The Cowboys basketball team opens up their season with a matchup against the Colorado Christian University Cougars, beating them with a score of 102-69.
Coming off of their previous season where the Pokes qualified for the NCAA tournament, they look to begin another successful season.
During the offseason, the team acquired a few new transfer players that played an important role in this first game. The three of them had impressive nights in their winning effort.
The two coming from University of Southern California, Ethan Anderson and Max Agbonkpolo, both played well, Anderson racking up eight assists and six rebounds. Agbonkpolo had 16 points, the second most on the team, along with a couple of assertive dunks.
The third transfer, Jake Kyman, notched 10 points in his Cowboy debut. He played at UCLA for his previous basketball seasons, and was a highly sought-after transfer player.
Against CCU, the Cowboys got off to an 8-0 lead after Hunter Thompson hit two three pointers in a row to begin the game.
The team was up 50-35 at halftime, looking to take down the Cougars with ease.
Graham Ike was out for this game, as he is expected to be out for six to eight weeks with a leg injury. He was voted Mountain West Conference preseason player of the year, so his presence will be missed on this team as they have a good shot of competing in the NCAA tournament.
Replacing Ike at the center position was player Caden Powell. The freshman played some great defense in his first collegiate basketball game.
The team ended up easily taking down the Cougars, beating them by 33.
The Pokes will play Nicholls State on Thursday, November 10, looking to open the season with two wins in a row.
