Early Monday morning, students and staff at the University of Wyoming received an email stating that TikTok will be banned from all University owned and operated devices and networks.
In the email, Brett Williams, Director of Applications and Customer Relations for IT, announced, “The University of Wyoming is requiring all employees to remove TikTok from any university-owned or issued technology equipment immediately. TikTok is now blocked on all university networks.”
The news comes over a month after Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon announced a memorandum to ban the platform from all state owned and operated devices and networks to include cell phones.
“Maintaining robust cybersecurity is a shared responsibility, and Wyoming is committed to identifying threats that could impact public safety,” Governor Gordon said in a press release on Dec. 15.
“The potential for foreign governments to access information collected by TikTok is extremely troubling,” Gordon added.
At the time of the announcement, Wyoming joined nearly a dozen states that implemented similar measures. As of Jan. 23, 25 states, along with 30 other universities, have announced a ban from the platform on university and state run networks and devices.
