Ian Haworth, a conservative writer and speaker, spoke on men’s responsibility regarding abortions at an event hosted by Turning Point USA at the University of Wyoming on April 12.
“I want to focus on one thing we could fix that overnight would stop 70% of abortions from ever happening. Men need to step up,” Haworth said at the beginning of his speech.
“A lot of men suck. At least the men are today’s broken society. So again, not all men– a lot of men.”
Haworth explained his belief that a large proportion of abortions are motivated by men failing to provide for their partners. He added that in many cases, primarily due to the failures of men, pregnant women are left in a place where they may feel abortion is the only or best option.
Haworth rhetorically asked the audience, “Would these women still get an abortion if their partner was supportive? If their partner provided for their family? If their partner married them?”
“73% of women said they got an abortion because they thought they couldn’t afford the child,” Haworth explained.
“But what if the men who got these women pregnant, got off the couch and worked their asses off to support these children? If men stepped up, 73% abortions wouldn’t even happen.”
Haworth stressed the importance of men having an opinion on abortion, encouraged pro-life men to be more vocal, and provided listeners with responses to common talking points.
“I care because murder is wrong. And murder is wrong, whether I’m a man, a woman, black, white, or green,” Haworth said, voicing his belief as to why men have a right to an opinion on abortion.
“My biological ability or inability to get pregnant has nothing to do with the morality of ending a pregnancy.”
The speech was just under 20 minutes in length, and ended with Haworth opening himself for questions from the audience.
The event closed with an hour-long questioning period that included a wide range of topics, from Haworth’s opinions on marriage laws to needs for societal change.
Event organizers believe that having speakers like Haworth is vital for healthy discourse and expression on campus.
“We need more talks like this on campus to break up the woke monologue,” Gabe Saint, TPUSA at UW President, said after the event.
Haworth, speaking to the Branding Iron after the event’s conclusion, also stressed the importance of open dialogue on university campuses.
“Don’t be scared of things that might go against what you think. Seek out people and viewpoints that go against what you believe. It’ll either strengthen what you believe or will improve you as a person,” Haworth said.
