The Cowgirls swim and dive team matched up against the Colorado State Rams in their first meet of the season, taking down their border war rivals by a score of 171-129.
The Cowgirls were highlighted by multiple impressive first place finishes. Maisyn Klimczak, last year’s Mountain West champion in the 1,650-yard freestyle, took first in the 500-yard freestyle and 1,000-yard freestyle. Her teammate, Sage Morton, paced her in the 1,000-yard freestyle taking second.
Carly Palmer took first place in the 100-yard breaststroke as well as the 100-yard freestyle. Brynlee Busskohl followed closely behind her in the 100-yard breaststroke, earning second place.
Tara Joyce, who was competing in her first ever collegiate swim meet, took first place in the 200-yard freestyle. Heidi Billings also took first in the 200-yard backstroke.
The Cowgirls also had a strong outing in diving, taking the top three slots in 1 meter diving and the top two slots in 3 meter diving. Alicia Gonzales shined in 1 meter diving, earning a final score of 283.58, just over 50 points ahead of second place. Gabriella Haigler just barely took first in 3 meter diving by a margin of 3, scoring 253.95.
Both the Cowgirls and the Cowboys will be back in action within the coming weeks to take on Air Force in Colorado Springs.
