The owners of Thai Spice announced on Sept. 23 via Facebook that they would be closing their doors after 11 years of operation. The connected Boba Café would shut down as well. This came as a surprise to both patrons and employees of the restaurant.
“We would like to thank the community of Laramie for their support and patronage throughout the years. We’d also like to express our gratitude to our employees, past and present, that helped make our restaurant successful,” Ladda and Matthew McCune wrote in their Facebook post.
“It was a shock to everyone, nobody had any idea,” former Boba Café employee Taegan Mooney said. “We were given a five-day notice.”
The response from patrons on Facebook was filled with overwhelming surprise and dismay, with almost 40 comments being left on the initial post announcing the closure. In the final week of operation, popularity increased for both the Thai Spice restaurant and the attached Boba Café.
“Everyone who came in was super upset because everyone really loved Boba. They were all saying ‘I can’t believe you’re closing!’” Mooney said.
The reason behind the restaurant closing was not explained in the announcement, but employees were informed that the McCunes had sold the business to someone called Sunny Psuksasuwan.
“We were told that Thai Spice would reopen, but Boba Café was permanently closing,” Mooney said.
The new owners have made claims that the restaurant would open again next week, keeping the name Thai Spice but revamping the menu. In the meantime, Boba Café employees have had to rush to find other jobs, but a few are hoping to get new positions at the newly reopened Thai Spice.
