After a tough 24-14 setback to San Jose State on the road, the Wyoming Cowboy football team came back to the visiting locker room to find that it had been completely ransacked. Personal items were stolen and strung about the Cowboys’ locker room when they returned after the loss. In a statement by the University of Wyoming, they announced they are currently collaborating with the San Jose State University police department and athletic department to further investigate the incident, as both universities have confirmed the theft.
According to a report by NBC Bay Area, 10 Cowboy football players reported their personal items had been stolen. It was also mentioned in the report by NBC Bay Area that many athletes competing in various sports at San Jose State University often do not leave their belongings in their own locker rooms because of how common locker room theft is in the area. The Cowboys’ personal belongings were still not safe even with a third-party security company being present on the site of the crime.
In a recent statement released by San Jose State University, they announced that they will be “evaluating” their security protocols and that the university will also “be in communication” with the third-party security company that is currently contracted to run San Jose State athletic events to “eliminate the likelihood of a future similar incident from occurring.”
Cowboy football head coach Jay Sawvel also spoke on the theft in his weekly presser, lamenting the incident.
“I think that the reminder for us is that when we go certain places, we will also bring additional personnel to ensure the safety of the things that our players have,” Sawvel said.
“It’s unfortunate, but we’ll make sure that we don’t have that issue again when we go into certain places and locations.”
At the time of writing, the offenders of the crime have yet to be apprehended and the items have not been returned to the athletes they were stolen from.
