Wyoming Cowboys basketball earned their second victory of the young season with a 81-66 home win over the Tennessee State Tigers on Sunday afternoon, boosted by a strong first half defensive showing, along with another Obi Agbim led offensive campaign.
In the first half, the visiting Tigers struggled from the field, and ended the first period going only 8/27 in shooting, while not cashing a single 3 pointer in 7 attempts. Agbim put up 12 points in the first 20 minutes, and was a solid 5/7 shooting, taking the Cowboys into the half with a 43-28 lead.
After the break, things looked to be trending in the same direction for the first few minutes, but the Tigers showed their teeth, going on a 15-2 run over the span of about 7 minutes. Heading into the final quarter of the game, it was only a 58-52 Pokes lead.
The teams battled back and forth as the clock ran down, and at the 4:24 mark, the Tigers were still in striking distance, only trailing by 7. Jordan Nesbitt took control however, and put up 5 points in under a minute for the Pokes to earn some breathing room. Kobe Newton then cashed a three and Cole Henry added a layup to help the Cowboys coast to a 81-66 victory.
Agbim ended the afternoon going 10/13 with 24 points, including a perfect 4/4 from beyond the arc. Nesbitt followed behind with 15 points while also nabbing a team high 7 rebounds.
Next up for the Cowboys is their first road trip as they travel to Lubbock, Texas to take on the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Wyoming will square off against former head coach Jeff Linder in his first year as an assistant coach for Texas Tech, which will surely be an intriguing matchup.
