The first Ski Areas in Colorado have begun opening already, with many winter sports enjoyers making their way to the slopes for a good time. While October was unusually hot, November has proven to be reliably snowy thus far in the mountains, giving resorts what they needed to open.
While unfortunately, no ski resorts are open in Wyoming (Snowy Range is set to open on December 6th), resorts like Eldora, Breckenridge, Arapahoe, Copper, and Keystone in Colorado have all opened in limited amounts. Each mountain has roughly 10-15% of their runs open currently, with more expected to open over the course of the month and especially into December.
While ski and snowboard goers may be eager to get out there on the slopes, early-season conditions require some extra caution. With only partial snow coverage on many of the runs, it’s important for skiers and snowboarders to look out for rocks and other hazards that may be exposed, especially on more difficult runs. Sticking to open trails, following posted signs, and being aware of the upcoming terrain can help everyone stay safe on the mountain. Beginners and seasoned riders alike should take it slow for the first couple of runs until it can be established where any obstacles may be.
Looking ahead, weather predictions indicate a promising season for snowfall (supposedly, this is always subject to change), with more snow expected throughout November and into December. Resorts are carefully managing both natural and artificial snow to hopefully make the experience as fun as possible for beginners. If you’re waiting for the majority of the mountain to open up, waiting until mid to late December, or even January, is recommended.
If you’re watching your budget, there are several resorts to keep in mind. Loveland is probably among the less costly ski areas in Colorado, with a lift ticket costing in the double digits as opposed to some of the more expensive resorts where tickets can cost several hundred dollars. Once Snowy Range, our local ski resort opens, it also provides an incredible deal, especially for students of the University of Wyoming. Financially minded people should definitely keep an eye out on Snowy Range’s snow forecast to see when good days to go might be after it opens.
Whether you’re a seasoned skier or just looking to enjoy the fresh air, the start of ski season is an excellent time to head to the mountains. While Colorado has multiple resorts already ready and open, waiting for Snowy Range may be a more financially viable option for college students. Make sure you’re wearing a helmet and watching out for any early season obstacles on your way down the mountain, and most importantly make sure to go with a group of friends for an extra fun time!
