On the eve of the 116th “Border War” between the Wyoming Cowboys and Colorado State Rams, both programs’ athletic directors came together at the running of the Bronze Boot trophy and announced that both teams will continue scheduling an annual matchup amongst each other amidst conference realignment.
Starting in 2026, the Rams will be making the move to the newly rebuilt Pac-12 conference while the Cowboys remain in the Mountain West for the foreseeable future. While the two teams are still trying to iron out their schedules to make room for the rivalry in 2026 and 2027, the Border War has been officially renewed from 2028 through 2035.
“The Border War is an important game for the State of Wyoming. It’s in all of our best interests that we play Colorado State in multiple sports every year. I believe this is the best rivalry game in the West and we look forward to continued battles,” said Wyoming athletic director Tom Burman in a recent press release.
Colorado State athletic director John Weber echoed a similar sentiment in a press release by Colorado State Athletics. Both organizations have stressed the importance of the rich history within the rivalry and that they don’t want it to end just because the two schools are in different conferences.
In the most recent iteration of the Border War, which was played just this last weekend, the Cowboys lost the Bronze Boot to the Rams for the first time in three years, as the Rams easily took care of the Cowboys by a final score of 24-10.
