The Skeet Team, an up-and-coming Chicago-based rap group, has released its newest mix tape, “The Kool-Aid is Cold.” Given that I am one of the most uneducated people when it comes to rap music, please take this review with a grain of salt. If you are a connoisseur of rap music, give these gentlemen a listen, because despite my personal opinions, I am sure to the trained ear they are quite good.
The first track is titled “It’s Ok.” The song opens with a shout out to all the women with large butts in the world. As a woman who does not have a “big booty,” I will admit that I was disappointed not to have been included in their shout out. Where is their shout out to all the moderately sized butts?
After that, the rap goes on to discuss how, despite the fact that people “talk shit,” it is quite alright to rap, have sex, and drink like a champion because as they said, “it’s okay!” Personally, despite the alienation I initially felt because of the size of my butt, this made me feel better because I was in desperate need of some validation for my very gangster, promiscuous and lush lifestyle.
The next song is called “Keep it Wavey.” I am going to be very honest with you and say that I do not know what it means to “keep it wavey.” However, after listening to the song I can say that I now want to “keep it wavey” every day. From what I gathered, “keeping it wavey” means that not only am I allowed to own fabulous bags, clothes and other material goods, I am encouraged to do so. This was such a relief because I thought the excessive purchasing of designer bags, shoes and clothing as a college student was a poor financial choice. Now I know I am just “keeping it wavey.”
I would have to say that the encouragement and advice that these songs have given me has really opened up a whole new world of possibilities for me. Next time I want to do something that might not seem like the best life choice, I will remind myself what Skeet Team said, “It’s ok!” If I want to purchase a $2000 handbag but my friends say that it is a waste of money, I will remind them that I am just trying to “Keep it Wavey.” If I got nothing else out of listening to the Skeet Team, I certainly got a sense of validation and acceptance, and that is the greatest gift the Skeet Team could ever give.
