Heading into the Border War this Saturday, the Rams knew that they would have to suppress the effectiveness of top Cowgirls point scorer Allyson Fertig. While they weren’t able to do this, with Fertig scoring a career high 34 points, the supporting cast of Cowgirls was unable to help her secure a win over their heated rivals.
Out of the gate, Fertig was in full command of the paint, boosting Wyoming to an early 12-7 lead. Emma Ronsiek of CSU had other plans however and quickly pushed the Rams back into it. The first half was a close back and forth battle, but the Rams were able to cash a few buckets late to earn a 34-27 lead at the break.
While the Cowgirls battled with the Rams, CSU was able to keep the Cowgirls at a distance in the second half. Wyoming was able to cut the contest to a mere 3-point Ram lead with two minutes late, but a Jadyn Fife three pointer proved to be the final dagger.
Fertig finished with a dominant 34 point, 15 rebound game, but a the team shot a measly 15% from beyond the arc, and they were unable to earn the points needed to comeback.
The Cowgirls will hit the road this week on Wednesday, playing the San Jose Sate Spartans at 8:00 PM.
