ASUW Strives to Support Students in all Aspects

The Associated Students of the University of Wyoming remain busy while also preparing for their upcoming election season. Before spring break, ASUW collaborated with the Wellness Center for Healthy Habits Week. The week consisted of several events and tools to help incorporate healthy and productive habits into your life. The events included a collage-making night to practice gratitude, habit bingo, a recipe night, puppy playtime, and a DIY self-care day.

“It’s important to have wellness activities for students because really our mental health is focused on all of our well-being and physical activity, mental activity, all those things,” said ASUW Director of Wellness and Sustainability Mack Malles. So I believe it’s really important to have activities that are centered around Wellness.

When speaking on what she hopes to come from the week, Malles said “A benefit is that students get to learn how easy it is to create your own self-care things. It’s also important to show them that even though maybe you live in a dorm, you can still take care of yourself. I hope that all students see how easy it is to create at-home DIY self-care things and to also see how important it is to have healthy habits.”

As the semester begins to come to a close, so do DIA Shuttle and ASUW Candidate applications. Both application windows close on Mar. 31. With past transportation services no longer servicing Laramie, ASUW aims to ease travel for college students through this free service that will be returning in the fall.

ASUW Vice President Paden Knull spoke on the organization’s current events. “It is a really exciting time, I encourage everyone to run if they’re interested in having a say around campus and if they’re looking for a new challenge,” said Knull. “ASUW is perhaps one of the greatest democratic experiments undertaken in the state of Wyoming, especially with so many talented diverse youths from different political backgrounds, education backgrounds, fields, disciplines, etc. It’s a great professional development opportunity.”

For those looking for ways to get involved without running in the election, ASUW will be hosting a candidate meet and greet on Apr. 3 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., a President/Vice President debate at 4 p.m. on Apr. 8, and a second meet and greet on Apr. 16 before students are given the opportunity to vote from Apr. 22 through Apr. 24 at 2 p.m.

“Everyone is working to help support students, but sometimes they don’t know there is an issue until students tell them and that can really shape a whole lot of things,” said Vice President Knull. “I encourage people to get engaged in the voting process. The more they can get out and the more they can get engaged with it, all the better for them, all the better for the community, and all the better for the university.”

ASUW is also focusing on spending down the carry-over account and developing new legislation to help support students in ways such as additional SafeRide vehicles, more rental devices through IT, a renters handbook, and more. Upcoming events include an Earth Day 5k, a financial literacy workshop on Apr. 11, and Denim Day to raise awareness for survivors of sexual violence on Apr. 23. To wrap up the end of the semester, ASUW is planning a garage sale event for students. This provides students the opportunity to donate or purchase small appliances, furniture, clothing, and other college-life necessities.
