The Division of Student Affairs here on the UW campus is led by the Vice President for Student Affairs, an office currently held by interim VP Nycole Courtney. Courtney was appointed interim VP following Kimberly Chestnut’s resignation last November. As of now, the process for selecting the incoming VP is anticipated to begin this summer.
“President Seidel and Provost Turpen anticipate identifying the process for selecting the next Vice President for Student Affairs this summer,” said Kelsey Kyne, Chief of Staff to the President here at UW.
The Division of Student Affairs plays a unique role in serving students, as it houses a multitude of different departments and offices all working to empower students through their time at UW, and beyond.
“The Division of Student Affairs aims to empower students to navigate life, experience fulfillment, and contribute to humanity. This mission is pursued by providing safe and appealing housing and dining options, integrated wellness services, educational programs that promote personal accountability, leadership opportunities, and avenues for alumni and parent engagement,” Kyne said.
The office is staffed by specialized professionals who oversee different areas such as wellness, housing, and student engagement. Faculty members at UW also play an important part in supporting student success. Different staff and faculty members mentor new students, facilitate academic integration, enhance student engagement, and teach saddle-up courses, according to Kyne. Faculty support is vital to promote student success.
“This Long-term engagement is essential to student success, as it fosters consistent academic guidance, intellectual growth, and a deeper sense of connection to the university,” Kyne said.
The Division of Student Affairs is home to many departments, such as CSIL, Campus Recreation, Pokes Center for Community Resources, Dean of Students Office, Student Health Service, University Counseling Center, Disability Support Services, NAERCC, Residence Life, and Student Success and Graduation. These departments are led by the Vice President for Student Affairs.
“The Vice President for Student Affairs leads the Division, overseeing the various departments to ensure they support student needs and align with the university’s mission and strategic objectives,” Kyne said. “This role involves strategic planning, resource allocation, policy development, and fostering collaborations across departments to enhance the overall student experience. The VP advocates for student needs, promotes initiatives that support student development, and works to create an inclusive and supportive campus environment.”
While Courtney has been serving as interim Vice President for Student Affairs, the process for selecting a new Vice President is set to begin this summer. According to Kyne, it is too soon at this time to determine what, if any, changes will be made once the next Vice President for Student Affairs comes on board.
“UW is committed to the success of all students and creating a welcoming environment where all can thrive. We are proud to offer many resources from health and wellness to academic support, to student engagement that support the success of all students,” Kyne said.
